On 7 March 2008 the Justice Secretary, Kenny MacAskill, announced that Lord Cullen of Whitekirk had been invited to carry out a review into the law relating to fatal accident inquiries to consider whether the sheriff court remains the appropriate forum for such investigations, and to address other issues – including procedural rules, and the interaction between FAIs and other investigations (such as those carried out by the Health and Safety Executive).
