(524)  SPIRIT OF ENTERPRISE: WHISKY AGREES WITH THE EXECUTIVE

 

The Scotch Whisky Association and the Scottish Executive published a co-operation agreement entitled Scotland’s Enterprising Spirit on 28 November 2005.  The SWA has produced a new set of descriptions for whisky – i.e. single malt, single grain, blended, blended malt and blended grain – and with the Executive and the DTI will be exploring how this may be translated into legislation recognized throughout the United Kingdom.  The aim is to ensure consumers receive clear and consistent information and to prevent misleading marketing”.  There will also be investigation of more rigorous protection of regional names such as “Islay” and “Speyside” in the whisky context.  The development follows the 2003 dispute about Diageo’s marketing of a blend of malts as “Cardhu pure malt” (see Nos 288
